Food For Thought: Corn Syrup

This weekend was my nephew’s birthday. Two of my sisters made him a cake and part of the decorations was water so they used corn syrup, food coloring, and sugar to make it look like water. It was funny to watch people freak out that the frosting was corn syrup, but know that they’re putting tons of high fructose corn syrup in their bodies. A product I’ll assume is worse and used in much higher quantities than the corn syrup on the cake. Plus, they ate tons of other snack foods that probably had a lot weirder stuff than corn syrup in it.

It’s funny how if it’s packaged into something we recognize (like a cookie, soda, cake, etc.) very feq question what’s in it. But if it’s something new, suddenly we’re curious what’s in it, how it’s made, and every miniscule detail.

I wish we could be the same way about all of our foods. And think “high fructose corn syrup” on the ingredients label was as weird to eat as corn syrup on top of a cake. Because I’m pretty sure there was HFCS inside the cake.
